Another double-header is waiting for BWT Lechner Racing and the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup: This weekend the series moves to the 4.381km long Hungaroring near Budapest for the 4th round of the 2023 championship, with Spa/Belgium scheduled only one week later as the start of the second half of the season. The Hungarian track has become one of the real classical F1 venues since it debuted in the 1986 calender as the first F1 event ever in Eastern Europe and remained there ever since.
The Supercup returns to the Hungaroring after a one-year break – so the young BWT Lechner Racing drivers have not much experience there yet. Nevertheless, they are all very optimistic about the upcoming weekend, as championship leader Bastian Buus confirms: “We had a great test when we were there and I feel comfortable with the track. I personally haven’t raced there before, but have a good feeling it will be our weekend.” Harry King follows suit: “I’ve never raced in Budapest, so I’m heading into the unknown which I’m excited about, however testing proved very positive with the team and I feel fully prepared for it.”
Rookie Harri Jones is also very upbeat: “I am really looking forward to hitting the track this weekend. As a team we had a really promising test here and so far it’s one of my favourite tracks I’ve driven. It requires a lot of commitment and there is very little room to rest”, the Australian states. “After my best race so far at the last event about two weeks ago my goal is to keep improving and move further up the pack and win the rookie class this time.“
“I hope that we can have another successful weekend at the Hungaroring, which has a very special meaning for me”, says BWT Lechner Racing Team Principal and CEO Robert Lechner. “As a youngster, since F1 came to Budapest in 1986 together with my father, I saw the great fights of Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost and Gerhard Berger at this track. Then I drove there myself in the beginning of my Formula racing career. It is also close to our home country Austria and we also come back here regularly with the Porsche Sprint Challenge Central Europe, so it feels very familiar. It is often very hot there – but no thoughts of summer holidays yet, still a lot of challenges ahead. One of the most important ones in Hungary is qualifying. As the narrow track allows very little overtaking, it is ever so important to start up front!”
