The King is back – victory for Harry King in Hungary

What a great weekend for Harry King at the Hungaroring: The BWT Lechner Racing driver scored his first victory of the season for himself and the team in the fifth round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2024. Under a slightly cloudy sky and more moderate temperatures than predicted before the weekend, the Brits dominated the race from start to finish, never got under real pressure, and finally celebrated at the top step of the podium.

King, also the winner at Hungary last year, started from pole position, got a good getaway, and managed to steadily pull away from the competition. At some point, he extended his lead to over four seconds, only to be able to completely focus on bringing the car home safely in the final laps and finally winning with a 3.1 second advantage. The 23-year-old also closed the gap to the championship leader to only 10 points and is fully back in the race for the title.

It was a more difficult weekend for the two youngsters, Robert de Haan and Theo Overhaus, who, after a not ideal qualifying and some track limit penalties in the race finished in P16 and 17.

Robert Lechner, Team Principal of BWT Lechner Racing: “The king is back! Such an important win at the start of the second half of the championship! Brilliant drive by Harry, he showed a great performance over the whole weekend - huge congrats to him, Now we are back in the championship. For our two youngsters, it was a bit of a learning weekend, but we will all work together, already focusing on the coming race, and I am sure they will come back stronger at Spa.”

Michael Schöch, Team Manager of BWT Lechner Racing: “The second double-header with Spa-Francorchamps coming up already next weekend is a logistical challenge as usual, but this great victory here in Hungary gives the whole team a big boost, as all our hard-working people saw their efforts rewarded by this triumph. Thanks to everybody! It´s also important that we have no damage to the cars, which is always a big worry at back-to-back weekends.”

Harry King: “I am really happy, what a fantastic race. The car was superb – thanks to the whole BWT Lechner Racing team for this. That´s the way to continue now for the rest of the season!”

Robert de Haan: “Not the weekend I had hoped for. I am disappointed with myself, as my performance in the race was not good and I let the team down in terms of points. But now I have to focus on Spa.”

Theo Oeverhaus: "Again, a difficult weekend for me, but I already put it behind me and am now fully focusing on Spa!”
