BWT Lechner Racing comes out in a great position of the very busy Zandvoort weekend with races number six and seven in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup 2023: At the 4.259 km long track in the dunes of the Dutch North Sea coast with its very unique banked corners Bastian Buus extended his championship lead to 21 points over his closest competitor with P2 on Sunday and P4 on Saturday. The Danish Porsche Junior now has a great chance to secure the title at the final weekend of the season in one week´s time at Monza. In the team championship BWT Lechner Racing is heading with a 31-point-lead into the decisive race.
Buus started from P2 into Sunday´s race and was able to put a lot of pressure on the leader from the very beginning and also tried to make use of two re-starts after safety-car periods. The gap between the two cars was often less than 0.3 seconds, “but the risk was to high today to attack for P1. Nevertheless considering the championship situation second place feels like a victory. I can now go to Monza in a very optimistic mood to be able to claim the title there.”
Saturday saw the replacement race for the cancelled Imola event at the beginning of the season: There Buus had brought his car home in P4 from P4 on the grid in a very eventful race, which sadly also saw a DNF for Harry King after different collisions out of his control. On Sunday the Brit finished in P5, securing very important points for the team championship. Australian rookie Harri Jones ended up in P10 and P12 on Saturday and Sunday respectively, managing to stay out of major troubles in the closely fought midfield.
BWT Lechner Racing Team Principal and CEO Robert Lechner was keeping his feet on the ground: “No reason to celebrate yet, even if we are leaving Zandvoort after the challenging double header in a very promising situation. Bastian is in a better position now regarding the championship than before the weekend. An advantage of 21 points is comfortable enough to travel to Italy in the absolutely right mindset”, he stated. “Also in the team championship with 31 points ahead we will make every effort to defend our title. That´s what all our focus will be on now - wrapping up both the driver´s and the team championship in Monza. For me it does not count at all when we win a championship, but only that we win it in the end. We have every reason to travel there with a lot of confidence.”
Michael Schöch, BWT Lechner Racing Team Manager, gave a big shout-out to the team: “A huge Thank You to everybody for a great job done in an impressive way. There was a lot of work for our guys to be done overnight to rebuilt Harry´s car after the damage from Saturday´s race – and they performed perfectly until 2 am. We are all very proud of our team, working together in such a way is the foundation for success. But after Zandvoort is of course already before Monza – so we have to pack up quickly now and already set our eyes on the task ahead!”
